Questions and Answers

Q: How will Indiana's new young drivers'
laws effect your student?
A: Effective July 1, 2009, young drivers will
not be able to use cell phones when driving.
Driving with passengers will be restricted
for the first 180 days instead of just 90.
They will also have restricted night-time
driving hours.
Effective July 1, 2010, students will need
to be fifteen and a half in order to enroll in
driver education classes.   Permits will be
held for 180 days before you can receive
operator's license.  (Permits are held now
for 60 days!)

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Driver Education at Five Star costs
$350.

Q: What are the driver education
requirements?
A: The state of Indiana requires 30 hours

classroom and driving.

Q: How old do you have to be to enroll in a driver's education class?
A: You may now enroll in a class at the age of fourteen. However, you cannot take the driving portion of the class until you are fifteen. Effective July 1, 2010, students must be 15 and a half in order to enroll in driver's education.

Q: How do I get a driver education learner's permit?

Q: What four forms of identification do I need to bring to the BMV?
A: You must have the student's original birth certificate, social security card,  and two "proof of residency" items.

Q: When can the student drive with the parent?
A: After the student receives his/her driver education learner's permit and has attended one driver education class, he/she may drive with a parent.
